Post-Publication Discussion Policy
Policy Statement
Jurnal Indo-Islamika recognizes post-publication scholarly discussion as an essential component of academic knowledge development. The publication of a research article does not represent the conclusion of scholarly inquiry; rather, it provides an opportunity for further critical engagement, methodological reflection, theoretical reconsideration, and evidence-based academic dialogue.
The journal encourages constructive discussion of published research, particularly when such engagement contributes to a deeper understanding of contextualized Islam, Islamic intellectual traditions, religious authority, and the sociocultural dynamics of Muslim societies.
This policy establishes the procedures for submitting, evaluating, responding to, and disseminating scholarly comments on articles previously published in Jurnal Indo-Islamika. It is informed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance on post-publication discussions and scholarly critiques.
1. Scope of Post-Publication Discussion
Post-publication discussion provides a scholarly forum for critically examining the arguments, evidence, methodologies, and interpretations presented in previously published articles.
The journal welcomes discussions addressing:
-
Theoretical and conceptual perspectives: Critical engagement with theoretical assumptions, conceptual frameworks, and explanations developed in published research.
-
Methodological approaches: Constructive assessment of research designs, analytical procedures, fieldwork methods, source selection, and the interpretation of empirical evidence.
-
Interpretation of Islamic sources: Alternative readings of Qur'anic verses, hadith traditions, classical Islamic literature, and contemporary Islamic thought, supported by appropriate textual and scholarly evidence.
-
Historical and documentary analysis: Clarification or reconsideration of historical arguments, archival evidence, source attribution, translation, and contextual interpretation.
-
Empirical findings: Critical discussion of research findings concerning lived Islam, religious institutions, Islamic social practices, and Muslim communities.
-
Interdisciplinary perspectives: Scholarly responses that introduce relevant approaches from anthropology, sociology, history, law, cultural studies, political science, or other disciplines.
-
Implications for future research: Identification of unresolved questions, conceptual limitations, and opportunities for further scholarly investigation.
Post-publication discussion should advance academic understanding rather than merely restate personal disagreement with an author's conclusions.
2. Forms of Scholarly Discussion
Jurnal Indo-Islamika may facilitate post-publication dialogue through several forms of scholarly communication.
A. Letters to the Editor
A Letter to the Editor presents a focused academic comment, question, or critique relating directly to an article previously published in the journal.
Letters should identify the specific argument, research finding, interpretation, or methodological issue being discussed and explain its scholarly significance.
A Letter to the Editor is not intended to replace a full research article or function as a general expression of personal opinion.
B. Author Responses
Authors of the original publication may be invited to provide a formal response to substantive scholarly comments.
An Author Response should address the central arguments raised in the critique and, where appropriate, clarify the research's theoretical foundations, methodological decisions, evidentiary basis, or interpretation of findings.
Responses should focus on reasoned scholarly engagement rather than the personal characteristics or motivations of the commenter.
C. Scholarly Commentaries
Where a published article generates significant academic debate, the editorial team may consider a commentary that offers an original analytical perspective on its contribution, implications, or limitations.
Such commentaries should demonstrate sufficient academic substance and contribute meaningfully to the journal's interdisciplinary research interests.
The publication of letters, author responses, or commentaries is subject to editorial assessment and does not occur automatically.
3. Submission of Post-Publication Comments
Readers, researchers, and other scholars may submit post-publication comments through the journal's official editorial communication channel.
A submission should include:
-
The title, author names, publication year, and DOI or URL of the article being discussed.
-
A concise statement identifying the principal issue or question.
-
An evidence-based scholarly argument supported by relevant references.
-
The commenter's name, institutional affiliation, and contact information.
-
A declaration of any relevant competing interests.
Contributions should be written in clear academic English and should remain focused on the published article.
The journal does not impose a general deadline for raising scholarly questions about previously published research. However, comments should be submitted while the discussion remains academically relevant.

4. Editorial Evaluation of Scholarly Comments
Submitted comments are subject to editorial assessment to determine their scholarly relevance, evidentiary support, clarity, and potential contribution to academic debate.
Editors may consider whether a submission:
-
Identifies a substantive issue concerning an identifiable published article.
-
Presents a coherent argument supported by appropriate academic sources.
-
Provides new clarification, criticism, or interpretation beyond what is already established.
-
Maintains an appropriate distinction between evidence-based scholarly criticism and unsupported allegations.
-
Uses respectful language consistent with professional academic communication.
Where specialized disciplinary or methodological expertise is necessary, the editorial team may seek independent academic advice.
Submissions that are repetitive, insufficiently substantiated, unrelated to the published article, or primarily intended to advance personal disputes may be declined.
An editor with a relevant conflict of interest should not independently determine the outcome of a submitted critique.
5. Right of Reply and Scholarly Exchange
When a substantive scholarly critique is considered suitable for further discussion, the editorial team may invite the authors of the original article to respond.
The authors should be given a reasonable opportunity to examine the comments and prepare a considered academic response.
A response may clarify the original argument, provide additional methodological explanation, identify evidence supporting the published interpretation, or acknowledge limitations.
The absence of an author response does not automatically invalidate a well-supported scholarly critique. The editorial team may consider publishing an academically substantive comment independently where appropriate.
Subsequent exchanges may be considered when they introduce significant new scholarly arguments. However, the journal may conclude a discussion when further correspondence becomes repetitive or ceases to offer meaningful academic contributions.
Participation in post-publication dialogue does not require the original author or the commenter to abandon a defensible scholarly position.
The purpose of the exchange is to clarify arguments and advance academic understanding, not necessarily to establish consensus.
6. Academic Freedom, Interpretive Diversity, and Responsible Dialogue
As a journal concerned with Islamic studies and Muslim societies, Jurnal Indo-Islamika recognizes that scholarly research may involve different methodological traditions, religious interpretations, epistemological assumptions, and theoretical perspectives.
The journal supports academically grounded disagreement concerning Islamic intellectual history, Qur'anic interpretation, religious authority, legal reasoning, cultural practices, and social transformation.
Differences between traditional, reformist, historical-critical, sociological, anthropological, or other scholarly approaches do not constitute grounds for excluding legitimate academic discussion.
Post-publication dialogue should be evaluated on the quality of its argumentation, analytical coherence, evidentiary basis, and relevance to the research under discussion.
The journal does not permit personal attacks, discriminatory statements, defamatory accusations, or attempts to discredit researchers on the basis of religious, institutional, or ideological affiliation.
Critical engagement with scholarly arguments must be distinguished from personal attacks against the scholars who advance them.
7. Publication and Accessibility of Scholarly Exchanges
When a post-publication contribution is accepted for publication, the editorial team may present it as a Letter to the Editor, Author Response, or Scholarly Commentary, as appropriate.
Published contributions should clearly identify the original article to which they refer.
Where supported by the journal's publishing infrastructure, accepted scholarly exchanges should be linked to the original article through the journal's online platform, allowing readers to follow the relevant academic discussion.
Published comments and responses should be appropriately attributed, dated, and made accessible in accordance with the journal's publication arrangements.
Acceptance of a scholarly comment does not imply that the editorial team endorses every argument advanced by its author.
Rather, publication signifies that the contribution has been assessed as suitable for constructive academic discussion.
8. Discussions on External Academic Platforms
Jurnal Indo-Islamika recognizes that scholarly responses to published research may also emerge through academic conferences, scholarly publications, institutional repositories, and moderated online academic forums.
Evidence-based critiques published through external channels may contribute to the continued evaluation and development of scholarly knowledge.
However, external discussions are not automatically treated as formal submissions to the journal.
Researchers seeking an official editorial response or consideration for publication should communicate directly with the editorial office and provide sufficient information to identify the article and relevant academic concerns.
9. Relationship with Other Editorial Policies
Post-publication discussion is intended to facilitate scholarly exchange rather than serve as an alternative mechanism for handling editorial complaints, research misconduct allegations, or formal changes to the scholarly record.
Where a discussion identifies concerns that require action beyond academic debate, the matter should be referred to the journal's relevant dedicated policy.
This distinction allows the journal to maintain a clear separation between scholarly disagreement, editorial accountability, and research integrity procedures.
10. Commitment to Continuing Scholarly Dialogue
Jurnal Indo-Islamika considers constructive post-publication discussion an important element of scholarly communication.
By providing opportunities for authors and readers to question, clarify, reconsider, and further develop published research, the journal seeks to strengthen critical inquiry and encourage intellectual exchange across disciplinary and methodological boundaries.
The journal supports the principle that scholarly knowledge remains open to reasoned criticism, further evidence, and theoretical reconsideration after publication.
