Article Types
Types of Manuscripts Accepted by Jurnal Indo-Islamika
Jurnal Indo-Islamika is an international-oriented, peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The journal welcomes original and analytically rigorous scholarly contributions that advance knowledge of contextualized Islam, Islamic thought, Muslim societies, and the transformation of lived Islam in Indonesia and beyond.
The journal prioritizes original research that contributes new empirical findings, theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, or critical interpretations to contemporary Islamic studies. Interdisciplinary submissions are particularly encouraged when they establish meaningful connections between Islamic scholarship and the humanities, social sciences, law, anthropology, sociology, history, education, media studies, and related disciplines.
The following five manuscript types are considered for publication.
1. Original Research Articles
Original Research Articles present original scholarly investigations that make a substantive contribution to existing knowledge. These articles are expected to identify a clearly defined research problem, critically engage relevant literature, employ an appropriate and transparent methodology, and present findings supported by systematically analyzed evidence.
The journal welcomes qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, historical, textual, and interdisciplinary research. Manuscripts should demonstrate scholarly originality, theoretical or empirical significance, and a clear contribution to ongoing academic debates.
Relevant research areas include lived Islam, religious authority, Islamic law and governance, Islamic education, Muslim social movements, Islamic social finance, gender relations, digital religion, and interactions between Islam and local cultures.
Essential characteristics: Original research questions, methodological transparency, evidence-based findings, critical discussion, and clearly articulated scholarly contributions.
2. Review Articles
Review Articles provide systematic, critical, and theoretically informed assessments of existing scholarship within the journal's focus and scope.
These manuscripts should move beyond descriptive summaries by identifying major scholarly debates, conceptual developments, methodological limitations, conflicting interpretations, and unresolved research questions.
The journal welcomes critical literature reviews, systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and other methodologically appropriate forms of scholarly synthesis.
Review articles should explain their analytical approach. Where systematic or scoping review methods are employed, authors are expected to describe the literature search, selection criteria, and synthesis procedures transparently.
Essential characteristics: Critical synthesis, engagement with significant scholarship, methodological clarity, identification of knowledge gaps, and an original contribution to understanding the field.
3. Conceptual Papers
Conceptual Papers develop, critically evaluate, or reconstruct theoretical frameworks, analytical perspectives, and scholarly concepts relevant to Islamic studies and Muslim societies.
These manuscripts may examine transformations in Islamic intellectual traditions, religious authority, legal reasoning, contemporary Muslim thought, or the relationships between religion, society, culture, and institutional change.
Conceptual contributions must be grounded in rigorous scholarly argumentation and sustained engagement with relevant primary sources and established academic literature.
The journal particularly encourages conceptual studies that question prevailing assumptions, examine competing interpretations, or propose theoretically grounded explanations for contemporary religious phenomena.
Purely descriptive discussions, unsupported normative assertions, and manuscripts lacking a clearly identifiable conceptual contribution are not considered sufficient scholarly contributions.
Essential characteristics: Conceptual originality, analytical coherence, critical engagement with scholarship, well-supported argumentation, and clear theoretical implications.
4. Book Reviews
Book Reviews provide critical academic evaluations of scholarly books relevant to the journal's research interests.
Reviews should assess the book's central arguments, theoretical positioning, methodology, supporting evidence, and contribution to its scholarly field. Authors are expected to situate the reviewed work within broader academic debates and identify its principal strengths and limitations.
A book review should constitute an independent scholarly assessment rather than a chapter-by-chapter summary or promotional description.
Priority is given to scholarly books that contribute meaningfully to debates on Islamic thought, Muslim societies, religious practices, cultural transformation, and interdisciplinary Islamic studies.
Essential characteristics: Accurate bibliographic information, critical evaluation, contextualization within relevant scholarship, and a balanced assessment of academic significance.
5. Field-Based Studies
Field-Based Studies present original research grounded in direct investigation of Islamic practices, institutions, communities, and sociocultural realities.
This category accommodates ethnographic research, qualitative case studies, participant observation, interviews, community-based investigations, and other appropriate forms of empirical fieldwork.
The journal particularly welcomes investigations of lived Islam, pesantren communities, local religious traditions, religious authority, Muslim organizations, interreligious relations, and the everyday negotiation of Islamic values and practices.
Authors should explain the research setting, participant or case selection, data collection procedures, analytical methods, and relevant ethical considerations.
Field-Based Studies are regarded as an empirical form of original research. Their distinct designation emphasizes the importance of contextual evidence, methodological transparency, and analytically grounded interpretations of lived religious phenomena.
Essential characteristics: Original field evidence, clear research context, ethical research practices, systematic analysis, and contributions to understanding Islam in its social and cultural settings.

Editorial Screening and Peer Review
Jurnal Indo-Islamika prioritizes original research manuscripts. Review articles, conceptual papers, and book reviews may be considered selectively, subject to their academic significance, suitability for the journal, and editorial priorities.
All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial editorial assessment to determine their relevance, originality, scholarly quality, and compliance with the journal's submission requirements.
