Plagiarism Policy

AHKAM: Jurnal Ilmu Syariah is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, originality, and ethical scholarly publishing. The Editorial Board considers plagiarism, including self-plagiarism and duplicate publication, to be serious violations of publication ethics. Therefore, AHKAM establishes the following policy to prevent, identify, and address plagiarism in manuscripts submitted for publication.

1. Plagiarism Screening

All manuscripts submitted to AHKAM: Jurnal Ilmu Syariah will undergo an initial plagiarism screening using Turnitin software. The screening process will be conducted by the Editorial Team after a manuscript has been received.

AHKAM applies a similarity threshold of 20% as an initial screening reference. Manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding 20% may be returned to the authors for revision or rejected, depending on the nature, extent, and context of the identified similarities.

The similarity index alone does not constitute definitive evidence of plagiarism. The Editorial Board will examine the similarity report carefully, considering properly cited quotations, references, commonly used academic expressions, methodological descriptions, and other legitimate similarities. Any indication of plagiarism will be evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board before a final decision is made.

2. Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the use, reproduction, or close imitation of another person's words, ideas, arguments, data, findings, or other intellectual contributions without appropriate acknowledgment, presenting them as one's own original work.

Plagiarism may occur in various forms, including but not limited to:

  1. Direct plagiarism: Copying text, sentences, or paragraphs from another source without quotation marks or proper acknowledgment.

  2. Mosaic plagiarism: Combining words, phrases, or ideas from multiple sources without appropriate citation.

  3. Paraphrasing plagiarism: Rewriting another author's ideas or arguments without acknowledging the original source.

  4. Data or idea plagiarism: Using another researcher's data, findings, arguments, theories, or intellectual contributions without proper attribution.

  5. Self-plagiarism: Reusing substantial portions of one's previously published work without proper acknowledgment or disclosure.

  6. Duplicate publication: Submitting or publishing substantially similar manuscripts in more than one journal or publication without appropriate disclosure and authorization.

3. General Policy

All manuscripts submitted to AHKAM must meet the following requirements:

  1. Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication by another journal or publisher.

  2. Authors must properly acknowledge all sources of information, ideas, arguments, data, and materials used in their manuscripts.

  3. Any material reproduced verbatim from another source must be clearly distinguished from the author's original writing through quotation marks, block quotations, and appropriate citations.

  4. Any substantial reproduction of text, tables, figures, images, or other copyrighted materials must obtain permission from the copyright holder, where required, and acknowledge the original source.

  5. Authors must disclose any substantial overlap between the submitted manuscript and their previously published or submitted works.

  6. Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts comply with academic integrity and publication ethics standards.

When plagiarism is identified, the Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the Editorial Board, will determine the appropriate action based on the seriousness and extent of the violation.

4. Levels of Plagiarism and Editorial Actions

AHKAM classifies plagiarism into three levels:

A. Minor Plagiarism

Minor plagiarism occurs when a relatively short passage from another publication is reproduced without appropriate acknowledgment, without involving substantial research findings, original arguments, or significant intellectual contributions.

Editorial Action:

  • The authors will receive a formal warning.

  • The manuscript will be returned for correction.

  • The authors will be required to revise the text and provide appropriate citations and acknowledgments.

  • The revised manuscript may undergo another plagiarism screening before proceeding to the next editorial stage.

B. Intermediate Plagiarism

Intermediate plagiarism occurs when a substantial portion of a manuscript contains material taken from another publication without proper acknowledgment, including extensive paraphrasing or the unauthorized reuse of previously published material.

Editorial Action:

  • The submitted manuscript will be rejected.

  • The authors may be prohibited from submitting manuscripts to AHKAM for a period of one (1) year.

  • The Editorial Board may take additional measures depending on the circumstances of the case.

C. Severe Plagiarism

Severe plagiarism occurs when a substantial portion of a manuscript reproduces another author's original research findings, data, arguments, theories, or significant intellectual contributions without proper acknowledgment. This category also includes deliberate and extensive plagiarism or serious cases of duplicate publication.

Editorial Action:

  • The manuscript will be rejected.

  • The authors may be prohibited from submitting manuscripts to AHKAM for a period of five (5) years.

  • The Editorial Board reserves the right to notify the relevant institutions, publishers, or other parties when necessary.

  • Additional actions may be taken in accordance with applicable publication ethics standards.

The classification and sanctions will be determined by the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with the Editorial Board, taking into account the extent, nature, intent, and consequences of the violation.

5. Authors' Responsibility and Collective Accountability

All authors are collectively responsible for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of the content of their submitted manuscript.

By submitting a manuscript to AHKAM, authors confirm that:

  1. The manuscript is their original work.

  2. All sources and intellectual contributions from other authors have been properly acknowledged.

  3. The manuscript has not been published previously and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

  4. All authors have read and agreed to AHKAM's publication ethics and plagiarism policies.

All authors are required to complete and sign the Author Declaration and Originality Statement as part of the submission process.

If plagiarism is established, the Editorial Board may apply the relevant sanctions to all authors listed in the manuscript, subject to an assessment of their respective responsibilities and involvement.

In cases of repeated plagiarism by the same author(s), the Editorial Board may impose more severe sanctions, including a permanent prohibition on future submissions to AHKAM.

6. Self-Plagiarism and Redundant Publication

This policy also applies to the reuse of material from an author's own previously published works.

Authors must clearly identify and cite any previously published text, figures, tables, research data, or other materials reused in their manuscripts. Reuse of copyrighted material must comply with the applicable copyright and licensing requirements.

The following provisions apply:

  1. Substantial overlap with previously published material must be disclosed to the Editorial Board.

  2. Manuscripts submitted simultaneously to AHKAM and another journal, where substantial overlap exists, may be considered cases of duplicate submission or redundant publication.

  3. Substantial overlap involving identical or nearly identical data, findings, arguments, figures, or extensive passages of text may be classified as intermediate or severe misconduct, depending on the circumstances.

  4. Reuse of limited material in the methodology section may be considered less serious, provided that the reuse is appropriate, transparent, and properly acknowledged.

  5. Authors must clearly explain the originality and contribution of a new manuscript when it builds upon their previous publications.

If substantial overlap with another manuscript is discovered during the review process or after publication, AHKAM may contact the relevant journal or publisher and take appropriate action in accordance with publication ethics standards.

7. Previously Published Conference Papers and Translated Publications

Manuscripts derived from conference proceedings, academic presentations, or publications in other languages must be disclosed to the Editorial Board.

For manuscripts previously published in conference proceedings, authors must:

  1. Identify the name and date of the conference and the publication details of the proceedings.

  2. Explain the differences and additional scholarly contributions of the manuscript submitted to AHKAM.

  3. Obtain permission from the relevant copyright holder when required.

For manuscripts previously published in another language, authors must disclose the original title, publication date, journal or publisher, and relevant copyright information. Such submissions may only be considered when the authors have obtained the necessary permissions and the Editorial Board determines that the manuscript provides a legitimate scholarly contribution and complies with applicable publication ethics standards.

AHKAM reserves the right to reject manuscripts that do not meet these requirements.

8. Editorial Responsibilities and Handling of Plagiarism Cases

The Editorial Team is responsible for conducting plagiarism screening and maintaining records of plagiarism cases and editorial decisions.

If an author previously sanctioned for plagiarism submits another manuscript, the Editorial Team will inform the Editor-in-Chief for further assessment and appropriate action.

The Editorial Board will handle plagiarism cases confidentially, fairly, and objectively. Authors will be informed of the relevant findings and given an opportunity to respond when appropriate before a final decision is made.

Where necessary, AHKAM may refer to the principles and guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in handling suspected plagiarism, redundant publication, and other forms of publication misconduct.

9. Policy Implementation and Author Declaration

This Plagiarism Policy is publicly available on the AHKAM: Jurnal Ilmu Syariah website and forms part of the journal's submission requirements.

All authors are expected to read, understand, and comply with this policy before submitting their manuscripts. By submitting a manuscript, authors acknowledge their responsibility to uphold academic integrity and confirm that their work complies with AHKAM's plagiarism and publication ethics requirements.

The Editorial Board reserves the right to revise this policy when necessary to ensure its continued alignment with recognized standards of academic integrity and ethical scholarly publishing.
