ORIGINAL RESEARCH REVIEWS SCHOLARLY DISCUSSIONS
Publication Scope

Jurnal Harkat: Media Komunikasi Gender, published by the Pusat Studi Gender dan Anak (PSGA), LP2M UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, publishes interdisciplinary scholarship addressing gender, women's experiences, children, families, and social transformation.

Relevant disciplines include religion, education, psychology, communication, sociology, law, public policy, history, culture, and related fields.

The journal's principal manuscript categories are Original Research Articles, Review Articles, and Scholarly Discussions. Scholarly Book Reviews may also be considered in accordance with editorial requirements.

Core Scholarly Requirements

Every manuscript should present a clear research problem or scholarly objective, engage critically with relevant literature, explain the research method or analytical approach, develop evidence-based arguments, and demonstrate an identifiable contribution to gender and child studies.

1. Original Research Articles
PRIMARY ARTICLE TYPE

Original Research Articles report new empirical findings or systematic analyses that make a substantive contribution to scholarship on gender, children, families, and society.

The journal welcomes:

  • Qualitative research, including interviews, observations, ethnography, and phenomenology.
  • Quantitative research using surveys and statistical analysis.
  • Mixed-methods research.
  • Educational, institutional, community-based, and social case studies.
  • Historical, documentary, media, and discourse analysis.

Research Articles should present a clear research problem, theoretical or empirical gap, methods, findings, critical discussion, and conclusion. The standard research article length is 4,000–8,000 words, according to the revised Author Guidelines.

Examples from Published Articles

Negosiasi Ruang Aman dan Partisipasi Substantif dalam Komunikasi Komunitas Perempuan — research on women's participation and safe spaces in a community setting.

Menaklukkan Puncak, Meruntuhkan Stereotip — an investigation of gender construction among women alpinists.

2. Review Articles and Literature-Based Studies

Review Articles critically examine existing research to synthesize evidence, assess scholarly developments, identify unresolved questions, and provide new theoretical, methodological, or practical insights.

Appropriate approaches include:

  • Narrative and critical literature reviews.
  • Systematic literature reviews and structured evidence syntheses.
  • Bibliometric and thematic analyses.
  • Critical syntheses of theoretical and empirical scholarship.

Review Articles should clearly establish their objectives, literature-search or source-selection approach, criteria for inclusion, analytical procedures, principal findings, and substantive contribution. Systematic reviews should use appropriate reporting guidance where applicable.

Descriptive summaries of individual publications without meaningful synthesis or analysis are insufficient.

Example from Published Articles

Lanskap Bibliometrik Ketidaksetaraan Gender dalam Pendidikan dan Wacana Ilmiah — a bibliometric analysis of research trends and scholarly discourse.

3. Scholarly Discussions and Conceptual Analyses

Scholarly Discussions develop theoretical, conceptual, interpretive, or critical arguments that contribute to understanding gender and child-related issues.

Relevant themes include:

  • Feminist theory, gender justice, and religious interpretations.
  • Women's leadership, empowerment, and social participation.
  • Gender representation in literature, film, media, and digital culture.
  • Gender-responsive education, family relations, and child welfare.
  • Gender-based violence, discrimination, and social inequality.

These articles must engage critically with appropriate sources, explain their conceptual or analytical framework, and develop coherent arguments supported by evidence rather than unsupported personal opinion.

Example of Relevant Published Scholarship

Ratu Kalinyamat dalam Perspektif Feminisme Postkolonial — an interdisciplinary analysis of resistance, women's leadership, and economic independence.

4. Book Reviews
SUBJECT TO EDITORIAL CONSIDERATION

Book Reviews may be considered for academically significant publications relating to gender studies, women's experiences, child welfare, family relations, and relevant interdisciplinary scholarship.

A scholarly Book Review should include:

  • Complete bibliographic information about the book.
  • A concise explanation of its central thesis and organization.
  • Critical evaluation of its strengths, limitations, methods, and contribution.
  • An assessment of relevance to gender and child studies.

Book Reviews must provide critical appraisal rather than promotional descriptions or chapter-by-chapter summaries. Their acceptance and format are subject to editorial consideration.
