Fundamental Licensing Principle

Open access allows readers and other users to access and lawfully reuse scholarly materials without seeking additional permission for activities already authorized by the license. The ShareAlike condition preserves equivalent licensing freedoms when adapted material is distributed.

1. Permissions Granted by the License

Under CC BY-SA 4.0, readers, researchers, educators, institutions, publishers, and other users may exercise the following rights in relation to licensed journal content.

Share

Copy and redistribute licensed material in any medium or format, including printed and digital forms.

Adapt

Translate, remix, transform, and build upon licensed materials while respecting the applicable license terms.

Commercial Reuse

Reuse licensed material for commercial or non-commercial purposes, subject to Attribution and ShareAlike.

The rights granted under CC BY-SA 4.0 are irrevocable for users who comply with the license terms. Additional permission from copyright holders is not required for reuse already authorized by the license, although other rights or restrictions may still apply.

2. Conditions of Reuse

Anyone reusing material covered by CC BY-SA 4.0 must follow the conditions established by the license.

2.1 Attribution (BY)

Give appropriate credit to the original authors and identify the publication source. Where supplied, preserve relevant copyright and license notices, provide links to the licensed material and license, and indicate whether changes were made.

2.2 ShareAlike (SA)

If users remix, transform, translate, or otherwise adapt licensed material and share the adaptation, they must license their adapted contributions under CC BY-SA 4.0 or a compatible license permitted by Creative Commons.

2.3 No Additional Restrictions

Users must not impose additional legal terms or technological restrictions that prevent others from exercising the permissions granted under CC BY-SA 4.0.

2.4 No Implied Endorsement

Attribution must not suggest that the original authors, Jurnal Harkat, or its publisher approve, sponsor, or endorse a particular reuse, adaptation, or interpretation.

Practical Attribution Example

Adapted from [Author Name], "[Article Title]," Jurnal Harkat: Media Komunikasi Gender, [Volume/Issue, Year], [DOI or Article URL], licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Changes were made to the original material. This adaptation is distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

3. Third-Party Content and Other Rights

The CC BY-SA 4.0 license applies to material for which the authors or other authorized rights holders have granted the relevant reuse permissions.

Separately credited third-party content may be subject to different copyright, licensing, or permission conditions. Such content may include:

  • Photographs and archival images.
  • Tables, illustrations, charts, and conceptual diagrams.
  • Film stills, media content, and literary extracts.
  • Historical, cultural, and religious documents.
  • Institutional records and other copyright-protected materials.

Authors must clearly identify third-party materials that are not covered by the article's CC BY-SA 4.0 license. Users should consult relevant credit lines and rights statements before reproducing or adapting such materials.

The license does not override privacy rights, moral rights, confidentiality obligations, or other legal protections that may restrict particular forms of reuse.

4. Author Rights and Open Access

Authors publishing in Jurnal Harkat: Media Komunikasi Gender retain copyright in their original scholarly work and grant the journal a non-exclusive right of first publication.

Authors may share and distribute their published articles through institutional repositories, academic websites, personal research profiles, and other lawful channels, provided that the original publication is acknowledged and applicable licensing conditions are respected.

When distributing the published version, authors are encouraged to provide the journal name, complete article citation, DOI or permanent article URL, and the CC BY-SA 4.0 license statement.

Open-access licensing promotes the wider dissemination of scholarship on gender equality, women's experiences, child welfare, family relations, religion, education, culture, communication, and social transformation.

5. Privacy, Consent and Ethical Protection

Research published in Jurnal Harkat may involve sensitive information concerning children, families, gender-based violence, discrimination, personal experiences, and vulnerable populations.

Authors must obtain necessary ethical approval, informed consent, and publication permission where applicable before including identifiable research materials.

The open-access license must not be interpreted as granting permission to violate participants' rights or disclose confidential information.

Participant Protection

Reuse of published material must continue to respect applicable privacy, confidentiality, and ethical obligations. The CC BY-SA 4.0 license does not independently authorize the disclosure of protected research records, identifiable participant data, or materials excluded from the licensed publication.

6. License Application and Publication Records

The applicable license should be clearly identified on the article landing page and, where practicable, within the published article file and associated publication metadata.

For articles published under CC BY-SA 4.0, the journal should provide a direct link to the official Creative Commons license to assist readers in understanding their reuse rights and obligations.

If an earlier article was originally published under different licensing terms, changes to the journal's current policy do not automatically replace rights already granted under the earlier license. Applicable article-level licensing information must be respected.

Questions concerning licensing status, reuse permissions, or inaccurate license information may be directed to the Jurnal Harkat Editorial Office.

License Summary

Articles published under CC BY-SA 4.0 may be shared, distributed, translated, and adapted, including for commercial purposes. Users must provide appropriate attribution, indicate modifications, and distribute shared adaptations under the same or an approved compatible license. Authors retain copyright, while Jurnal Harkat holds the non-exclusive right of first publication.
