An English for General Purposes Syllabus Design for Indonesian University Student-Candidates

Abstract


The study focuses on the design of syllabus for Indonesian university-student candidates based on the needs analysis to the targeted participants. To date, syllabus to address the needs of the pre-university students has not received a lot of attention. Hence, the need to conduct this study. Data is obtained through survey, semi-structured interview, and classroom observation. The needs analysis indicate need for an English for General Purpose (EGP) syllabus design. Both the receptive and productive skills are integrated, with the emphasis on optimal input and output. An EGP syllabus that adopts theme and skill-based syllabus with two big themes Campus Life and Student Life is proposed. The former covers learning system and various activities in campus, and the latter is about students’ being and role as member of campus community. The syllabus design is expected to meet the English instructors’ needs on English for university preparation course that covers English knowledge and skills and knowledge about campus learning system general.
