Refleksi: Jurnal Kajian Agama dan Filsafat was first published in four editions between 1986 and the end of 1987. However, for unknown reasons, the publication ceased. After an eleven-year hiatus, the editorial team relaunched Refleksi with a new edition in November 1998.
The team revived Refleksi in response to various demands. First, the newly appointed rector of IAIN encouraged each faculty to regularly publish a journal to disseminate the academic work of its lecturers. Second, the Dean of the Faculty of Ushuluddin initiated a plan to revive Refleksi, which had long been inactive. Third, the academic community of the Faculty of Ushuluddin collectively recognized the importance of developing their scholarly creativity.
In 2000, the editorial team began publishing Refleksi three times a year and successfully obtained accreditation from the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia through Decree No. 395/DIKTI/Kep/2000 issued by the Directorate General of Higher Education.
In 2004, Refleksi received accreditation again from the Ministry of National Education through Decree No. 39/DIKTI/Kep/2004 with a “B” rating, valid until November 2007.
As global academic demands increased, the scholarly community was driven to continue producing high-quality scientific work. Consequently, many universities began to publish competitive academic journals. However, around 2009, the management of Refleksi experienced a decline in performance, which led to a decrease in article contributions. To attract more contributors, the editorial team changed the subtitle of the journal from Refleksi: Jurnal Kajian Agama dan Filsafat to Refleksi: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Ushuluddin. Due to these challenges, the journal reduced its publication frequency to twice a year.
To honor the founders of Refleksi, the new management decided to restore the journal's original title: Refleksi: Jurnal Kajian Agama dan Filsafat. They also updated the title in various indexing systems, such as Garuda Rujukan Digital (GARUDA) and the Science and Technology Index (SINTA).
Following a change in management and in response to the evolving demands of the digital era, which requires academic journals to be published online, the new editorial team began a comprehensive overhaul of the journal's management system. These efforts bore fruit in the first Accreditation Period of 2020, when Refleksi achieved accreditation based on the Decree of the Minister of Research and Technology/Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) No. 85/M/KPT/2020, issued on April 1, 2020, with a rank of 3. In 2022, the editorial team successfully maintained this rank through the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia No. 105/E/KPT/2022, issued on April 7, 2022.
