Open Access Policy
KONVENSI: Jurnal Hubungan Internasional dan Ilmu Sosial provides immediate open access to all published content based on the principle that making scholarly work freely available supports a wider global exchange of knowledge. All articles in this journal may be accessed, read, downloaded, copied, distributed, printed, searched, or linked without financial or legal barriers. This commitment reflects the journal’s dedication to advancing scientific communication and ensuring that research in International Relations and Social Sciences can be disseminated as widely as possible.
In line with international open-access standards, KONVENSI adopts and supports the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI).
Budapest Open Access Initiative
An enduring academic tradition and modern digital technology have converged to create an unprecedented public good. The tradition is the willingness of scholars and researchers to publish the outcomes of their work without financial compensation, driven by the pursuit of knowledge and scientific progress. The technology is the internet, enabling global electronic distribution of peer-reviewed research and free, unrestricted access for scientists, students, policy-makers, educators, and the general public.
Removing access barriers to scholarly literature accelerates research, enriches education, supports knowledge equity, and enables broader international dialogue. Open access ensures that the benefits of academic work flow freely between individuals, institutions, and societies, fostering a shared intellectual environment where scientific inquiry can thrive.
Despite significant progress, open access has yet to reach all scholarly publications. Nevertheless, many global initiatives have demonstrated that open access is sustainable, economically manageable, and highly beneficial—enhancing visibility, readership, and research impact. To expand these benefits, BOAI calls upon universities, governments, funding bodies, journal publishers, academic associations, and individual scholars to support the removal of access barriers and promote the widest possible dissemination of knowledge.
The literature most suitable for open access is that which scholars produce without expectation of payment: principally, peer-reviewed journal articles and preprints. Open access allows any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full text of articles without technical or financial barriers, provided proper acknowledgment is given to the authors and original source.
While freely available online, scholarly publishing still requires resources. However, BOAI affirms that open access can reduce overall costs while expanding the reach of academic dissemination. Achieving this goal requires collaborative efforts and innovative models of cost recovery.
To advance open access, BOAI recommends two complementary strategies:
- Self-Archiving
Scholars should be supported in depositing their peer-reviewed articles in open, interoperable repositories. When aligned with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) standards, distributed repositories function as a unified global research collection, enabling researchers to discover scientific work regardless of where it is stored.
- Open-Access Journals
Scholars and institutions are encouraged to establish and support journals that provide open access to their content. Such journals use copyright not to restrict access but to ensure proper attribution and long-term preservation. To remove subscription barriers, open-access journals adopt alternative funding mechanisms—through institutional support, grants, endowments, or other sustainable models.
Open access is a collective effort. The BOAI invites publishers, scholarly communities, universities, research institutions, governments, libraries, and dedicated individuals to contribute to creating a future where research and education in all parts of the world benefit from unrestricted access to knowledge.
