Abstract

Digital platforms increasingly shape how spirituality is encountered, judged, and practiced. Through recommendation, visibility, and engagement metrics, they may alter the conditions in which religious orientation, authority, and discipline are formed. This conceptual article proposes Islamic Cyberspirituality as a framework for analyzing and evaluating digital spiritual practice. Using theory synthesis, it combines recent scholarship on digital religion, algorithmic mediation, and New Age and platform spirituality with a defined corpus of primary Islamic sources read within a Sunnī, Ashʿarī–Ghazālian tradition. The literature suggests three analytically distinct shifts: an ontological shift in orientation, an epistemic shift in authority, and an ethical-practical shift from discipline to consumption. The article proposes that tawḥīd supplies both an orientation criterion and the accountability that grounds criteria of credibility, that tazkiyah al-nafs specifies a staged process of transformation (niyyah, mujāhadah, murāqabah, muḥāsabah, practice, and akhlāq), and that technology should be evaluated as wasīlah using criteria that include platform design and incentives. The result is a proposed model with propositions and indicators, not a tested finding about user behaviors. Empirical studies of Muslim digital communities are needed to examine it.
