Abstract

This article compares selected works in Western Islamic Studies and Indonesian hadith scholarship published between 2010 and 2020 to examine changes in research objects, evidentiary practices, and knowledge circulation in contemporary hadith studies. Previous scholarship has largely framed their relationship through debates on hadith authenticity, often overlooking shifts in research objects and analytical procedures. Using a comparative literature-based approach, this study analyzes selected publications in terms of their research objects, sources, forms of evidence, and modes of inference. The findings show that both academic environments experienced a broadening of research objects and procedures. Within Islamic Studies, hadith research expanded beyond source criticism to include commentary traditions, manuscripts, transmission, authority, and reception. In Indonesia, similar developments are reflected in methodological debates, mappings of scholarship and publication trends, curriculum studies, and living hadith research. Differences in publication language, genre, and publishing channels indicate patterns of asymmetrical knowledge circulation, although the extent of such asymmetry is not measured in this study. The findings suggest that the relationship between the two environments is better understood as a process of intellectual exchange and adaptation rather than merely a response to debates over authenticity.
