Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Generative AI Policy

Responsible use of artificial intelligence in scholarly publishing, with transparency, human accountability, confidentiality, and editorial independence.

HUMAN ACCOUNTABILITY AI DISCLOSURE CONFIDENTIALITY

Policy Statement

Arabiyat: Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Arab dan Kebahasaaraban is committed to maintaining academic integrity, originality, transparency, and accountability in the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI technologies.

The journal recognizes that AI-assisted tools may support scholarly communication and manuscript preparation. However, such technologies must not replace authors' original intellectual contributions, critical thinking, independent analysis, or academic judgment.

This policy applies to authors, reviewers, editors, and other parties involved in the editorial and publication process. All AI-related activities must comply with the journal's requirements concerning research integrity, responsible authorship, confidentiality, intellectual property, and ethical scholarly publishing.

Fundamental Principle

AI may assist with limited technical aspects of academic writing, but it must not replace human scholarly judgment or responsibility. Authors remain fully accountable for the accuracy, originality, reliability, and integrity of their manuscripts, regardless of whether AI-assisted technologies have been used.

PERMITTED Language editing, grammar correction, readability, and outline organization
REQUIRED Disclosure of AI tools, purposes, and assisted sections
PROHIBITED Substantial AI-generated manuscript content, fabricated data, and citations

1. Permitted Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use AI-assisted technologies for limited purposes that improve the presentation of their work without changing the scientific substance or generating original research contributions on their behalf.

Permitted uses include:

  • Language editing: Improving grammar, spelling, punctuation, and linguistic consistency.
  • Clarity and readability: Improving sentence structure and presentation without altering scholarly meaning.
  • Outline development: Assisting with the organization of an initial manuscript outline.
  • Draft organization: Improving the logical arrangement of material originally developed by the authors.

All permitted AI-assisted content must be carefully reviewed, verified, and approved by the authors before submission. AI assistance must not introduce unsupported statements, distort research evidence, or change the intended interpretation of findings.

2. Prohibited Use of AI

Arabiyat strictly prohibits AI use that compromises the authenticity, originality, or reliability of scholarly research.

Prohibited practices include:

  • Generating substantial portions or complete sections of a manuscript.
  • Producing research analyses, interpretations, discussions, or conclusions in place of the authors' independent scholarly work.
  • Fabricating, falsifying, or manipulating research data, statistical results, interview responses, or documentary evidence.
  • Generating nonexistent references, citations, quotations, policy documents, or other sources.
  • Creating misleading figures, tables, charts, or visual evidence that do not accurately represent authentic research materials.
  • Submitting AI-generated content without appropriate human verification and acknowledgment.
  • Using AI tools to conceal plagiarism, misrepresent originality, or circumvent publication-ethics requirements.
  • Disclosing confidential or legally protected research information to external AI systems without appropriate authorization and safeguards.
Research Integrity: AI-generated information must never be presented as verified research evidence without authentic supporting sources. Authors must independently verify all references, quotations, factual statements, and research materials included in their manuscripts.

3. AI Disclosure and Transparency

Authors must disclose any use of AI or AI-assisted technologies in manuscript preparation. The declaration must be included in the Acknowledgments or Methods section, as appropriate.

The disclosure must clearly identify:

  • The name of the AI tool or technology used.
  • The specific purpose for which the tool was used.
  • The manuscript section or material affected by AI assistance.
  • The authors' verification and oversight of the AI-assisted content.
Suggested Generative AI Use Statement

"The authors used [AI tool name] for [specific purpose, such as language editing or improving readability] in [relevant manuscript section(s)]. All AI-assisted content was reviewed and verified by the authors. The tool was not used to generate research data, analyses, interpretations, conclusions, or references. The authors take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript."

The declaration must accurately reflect the actual use of AI. Authors must not omit, misrepresent, or conceal AI assistance that falls within the journal's disclosure requirements.

4. AI, Authorship and Author Responsibility

AI systems, chatbots, large language models, and other automated technologies cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to Arabiyat.

Authorship requires meaningful human intellectual contribution, approval of the final manuscript, and accountability for the research and its publication.

Authors remain responsible for:

  • The accuracy and originality of the submitted manuscript.
  • The authenticity of research data and supporting evidence.
  • The appropriateness of research methods and scholarly interpretations.
  • The validity and accuracy of references, quotations, and citations.
  • Compliance with ethical approval, confidentiality, and intellectual-property requirements.
  • Identifying and correcting inaccurate or misleading AI-assisted content.
  • Responding to editorial questions concerning AI use and research integrity.
Human Accountability: Responsibility for the submitted and published manuscript rests entirely with its human authors. The use of an AI tool does not reduce or transfer that responsibility.

5. AI-Generated Images, Figures and Research Evidence

Images, figures, tables, graphs, maps, and other visual materials must accurately represent authentic research evidence and comply with the journal's requirements concerning originality, transparency, and methodological integrity.

Generative AI must not be used to fabricate, manipulate, obscure, or misrepresent visual or numerical evidence in submitted manuscripts.

In studies involving Arabic education and Arabic Studies in the world, particular care must be taken when presenting data and information.

Where AI technologies are themselves the subject of academic research, authors must describe the research design, relevant tools, data sources, and analytical procedures transparently. Such research remains subject to the journal's restrictions on fabricated content and AI-generated scholarly contributions.

6. Use of AI by Reviewers

Manuscripts undergoing peer review are confidential scholarly documents. Reviewers are responsible for protecting unpublished research materials and maintaining independent academic judgment.

  • Reviewers must not upload confidential manuscripts, manuscript excerpts, supporting documents, or review reports into external generative AI systems.
  • Peer-review assessments must reflect the reviewer's own scholarly expertise and professional judgment.
  • AI-generated evaluations must not replace independent examination of the manuscript.
  • Reviewers must not disclose confidential manuscript information or use it for personal, institutional, political, or commercial advantage.
  • Reviewers remain responsible for the accuracy, fairness, and integrity of their reports.
Confidentiality: Unpublished manuscripts, reviewer comments, and supporting materials must be treated as confidential throughout the peer-review process. The use of AI must not compromise this obligation.

7. Use of AI by Editors and Editorial Board Members

Editors and Editorial Board members must maintain confidentiality, impartiality, and human accountability in manuscript evaluation and publication decisions.

Submitted manuscripts, confidential reviewer reports, unpublished research data, and private editorial correspondence must not be uploaded to public generative AI systems.

AI tools must not independently determine manuscript acceptance, revision, or rejection. Editorial decisions must remain under the authority of the Editor-in-Chief or appropriately designated human editors.

Editors are responsible for ensuring that any authorized technical assistance complies with the journal's confidentiality, ethical publishing, and editorial independence requirements.

8. AI-Assisted Technologies in Editorial Management

The journal may use appropriately controlled technologies for limited technical and administrative activities, provided that confidentiality, data security, editorial independence, and human oversight are maintained.

Potential supporting activities include:

  • Technical manuscript submission checks.
  • Identification of textual similarities and possible duplicate submissions.
  • Verification of bibliographic and publication metadata.
  • Identification of formatting or technical inconsistencies.
  • Limited production and copyediting assistance.
Mandatory Human Oversight: These activities describe potential supporting functions and do not imply that every technology is currently implemented by the journal. Any authorized use must be subject to human verification and appropriate safeguards. AI must not replace scholarly evaluation or editorial decision-making.

9. Policy Violations and Editorial Action

Violations of this policy may be investigated by the Editorial Team in accordance with the journal's publication-ethics procedures.

Depending on the nature and seriousness of the violation, editorial action may include:

  • Requesting clarification or an accurate AI-use declaration.
  • Requiring manuscript revision or additional verification.
  • Conducting further originality or research-integrity assessment.
  • Rejecting manuscripts involving serious or unresolved violations.
  • Consulting relevant institutions or experts when necessary.
  • Issuing a correction, Expression of Concern, or retraction where justified after publication.

Editorial responses must be proportionate to the available evidence, the seriousness of the violation, and its effect on the reliability and integrity of the research. Retraction is not an automatic consequence of every AI-disclosure error.

10. Policy Governance and Review

This policy is guided by the principles of transparency, responsible authorship, academic integrity, confidentiality, intellectual-property protection, fairness, and human accountability.

Arabiyat will periodically review and update its AI policy to reflect developments in artificial intelligence technologies, international scholarly publishing practices, and relevant publication-ethics guidance.
