Abstract

This article aims to examine the role of Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849–1905) as the chief editor of al-Waqā’i‘ al-Misrīyyah (1880–1882), Egypt’s official gazette, and his contributions to the development of journalism and socio-religious reform in Egypt. Under his leadership, al-Waqā’i‘ al-Misrīyyah experienced a rise in popularity and reputation as a leading newspaper supporting the government’s reform program amidst the rapid growth of the independent press. Through his writings, ‘Abduh played a role in building national awareness of modernization, influencing public opinion, and promoting education and social learning. These efforts helped strengthen the spirit of nationalism, develop higher standards in language, literature, and culture, and raise public awareness of evolving political and cultural dynamics. His career spanned the reigns of Riyadh Pasha and Sharif and the subsequent period of political turmoil. This research uses a qualitative approach with documentation techniques and descriptive, analytical, historical, and comparative methods. The results of the study indicate that al-Waqā’i‘ has gained unprecedented influence and success during Abduh’s editorship through its dynamic and productive articles and rigorous daily production of the newspaper that helped raise public issues and concerns and draw awareness to the global political situation while defending important journalistic values, norms, and ethics.
