Plagiarism Policy

Jurnal Kimia Valensi is committed to upholding the highest standards of academic integrity, scientific rigor, and ethical publication practices in the field of chemistry and related sciences. The journal only considers original, unpublished, and ethically conducted research. Submission to Jurnal Kimia Valensi implies that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere and is not under consideration by another journal or publisher.

This policy covers plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data fabrication and falsification, image and spectrum manipulation, duplicate publication, and other forms of scientific misconduct.

1. Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as the use of text, ideas, data, figures, tables, schemes, or results from another source without proper acknowledgment. Self-plagiarism refers to the reuse of an author’s own previously published material without appropriate citation, disclosure, or permission.

Both practices are considered serious ethical violations in scientific publishing.

Jurnal Kimia Valensi uses plagiarism detection software to screen all submitted manuscripts. This includes similarity checks on:

  • Main text

  • Abstract and conclusions

  • Figures, tables, and captions

Similarity Requirements:

  • The overall similarity index must be below 20%.

  • High similarity in methodology, results, or discussion sections will be examined more strictly.

  • Manuscripts exceeding the threshold may be rejected outright or returned for major revision.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that all sources are properly cited and that paraphrasing does not distort original meanings.

2. Data Fabrication, Falsification, and Selective Reporting

In the context of chemical research, the following practices are strictly prohibited:

a. Data Fabrication

The invention of data, results, spectra, chromatograms, or experimental observations that were never actually obtained.

b. Data Falsification

The manipulation of research data, experimental conditions, or results to produce misleading conclusions, including:

  • Altering numerical values

  • Deleting outliers without scientific justification

  • Selective reporting of only “successful” experiments

c. Selective Reporting

Omitting negative, inconsistent, or contradictory results that are essential for the integrity and reproducibility of the study.

All experimental data presented in Jurnal Kimia Valensi must be accurate, complete, and reproducible. Authors may be asked to provide raw data, lab notebooks, spectra files, or instrument outputs for verification.

3. Image, Figure, and Spectrum Manipulation

Given the experimental nature of chemical research, Jurnal Kimia Valensi applies strict scrutiny to all visual data, including:

  • Spectra (NMR, IR, UV-Vis, MS, etc.)

  • Chromatograms (GC, HPLC, LC-MS, etc.)

  • Microscopy images (SEM, TEM, AFM, etc.)

  • Gel images, diffraction patterns, and other instrumental outputs

The following practices are not permitted:

  1. Image Manipulation

    • Adding, removing, or altering features in images

    • Excessive contrast, brightness, or color adjustments that misrepresent data

    • Splicing or merging images without clear indication

  2. Spectrum Manipulation

    • Editing peaks, baselines, or noise levels

    • Deleting impurities or solvent peaks without explanation

    • Reusing spectra from previous publications without disclosure

  3. Figure Duplication

    • Reusing identical figures or spectra to represent different experiments or compounds

    • Submitting figures previously published elsewhere without citation and permission

Any detected manipulation intended to mislead will be treated as serious scientific misconduct.

4. Duplicate (Redundant) Publication and Salami Slicing

Duplicate or redundant publication occurs when substantially the same research is published in more than one journal without proper cross-referencing. This includes:

  • Publishing the same dataset with minimal modification

  • Dividing one study into multiple papers (“salami slicing”) without scientific justification

  • Reusing tables, figures, or experimental results without citation

If a manuscript is an extension of previously published work, authors must:

  • Clearly disclose the prior publication

  • Explain the novelty and additional contribution of the new submission

Abstracts published in conference proceedings may be submitted, provided full disclosure is made and the manuscript offers substantial new data or analysis.

5. Preprint Policy

Authors may deposit their Author’s Original Manuscript (AOM) on non-commercial preprint servers (e.g., arXiv, ChemRxiv, HAL, PeerJ Preprints) prior to submission or during peer review, provided that:

  • The preprint server allows authors to retain copyright

  • The preprint is clearly cited in the submitted manuscript

Once the article is published in Jurnal Kimia Valensi, authors are encouraged to update the preprint with a link to the final published version.

Jurnal Kimia Valensi does not consider manuscripts that are already formally published or under active review elsewhere.

6. Authorship Ethics and Acknowledgment

All listed authors must:

  • Have made a significant scientific contribution to the work

  • Approve the final version of the manuscript

  • Agree to be accountable for all aspects of the research

Gift authorship, ghost authorship, and honorary authorship are not acceptable. Contributions from technicians, instrument operators, or funding bodies must be properly acknowledged.

7. Handling of Misconduct and Ethical Violations

Jurnal Kimia Valensi follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines in handling suspected cases of:

  • Plagiarism and self-plagiarism

  • Data fabrication and falsification

  • Image and spectrum manipulation

  • Duplicate publication

  • Authorship disputes

If misconduct is suspected:

  1. Authors will be contacted for explanation and clarification.

  2. Supporting evidence may be requested (raw data, original spectra, lab records).

  3. If misconduct is confirmed, actions may include:

    • Rejection of the manuscript

    • Retraction of published articles

    • Notification to authors’ institutions or funding bodies

8. Commitment to Scientific Integrity

Jurnal Kimia Valensi is dedicated to maintaining the credibility, reproducibility, and reliability of chemical research. Ethical breaches not only undermine individual publications but also damage the integrity of the scientific record. Authors, reviewers, and editors share collective responsibility in safeguarding these standards.
