Merawat Harmoni di Tengah Perbedaan: Adaptasi Sosial dan Keberagamaan Masyarakat Sunda Wiwitan dan Masyarakat Pendatang Di Kampung Budaya Jalawastu Brebes

Abstract

This article examines social and religious interactions as well as the process of identity adaptation between the Sunda Wiwitan community and migrant communities in Jalawastu Cultural Village, Brebes. The study is motivated by cultural and religious differences that have the potential to influence the dynamics of social life within the community. This research employs a qualitative method with a sociological approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with the village head, traditional custodians, customary leaders, members of the Sunda Wiwitan community, migrant communities, and a literature review. Data were analyzed using Henri Tajfel and John Turner's Social Identity Theory to understand the processes of identity formation, maintenance, and adaptation within diverse social interactions. The findings reveal that social and religious interactions between the Sunda Wiwitan community and migrant communities are characterized by harmonious relationships fostered through cooperation in social, cultural, and religious activities. Differences in religious beliefs do not lead to significant conflict due to mutual respect and the freedom of each group to practice its own beliefs. The process of identity adaptation occurs through the adjustment of migrant communities to the values and customary norms of the Sunda Wiwitan community without compromising their own group identity. This study concludes that social harmony in a multicultural society can be achieved through tolerance, respect for diversity, and the ability of different groups to adapt to one another.
