Abstract

Low achievement and limited classroom activity in whole-number lessons motivated this study. The research aimed to describe the use of picture media and analyze improvements in mathematics achievement and learning activity among third-grade students at MIS Plus Harapan Bunda Sibolga. A two-cycle classroom action research design was employed, with each cycle consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 22 students, comprising 11 boys and 11 girls. Data were collected through achievement tests, activity observations, and documentation and were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. Individual test scores were recalculated to ensure consistency. The mean score increased from 64.77 in the pre-cycle stage to 71.59 in Cycle I and 90.45 in Cycle II. Based on a mastery criterion of 70, the mastery percentage increased from 27.27% to 72.73% and finally 90.91%. The average learning-activity score increased from 57.22% in Cycle I to 89.38% in Cycle II. Cycle II improvements included simpler visual displays, more systematic explanations, more balanced grouping, closer discussion support, and wider opportunities for presentation. Picture media helped make whole-number concepts more concrete, attracted students' attention, strengthened participation, and improved understanding. The findings indicate that picture media can serve as an effective alternative for improving mathematics achievement and classroom activity in Grade III.
