Abstract

This study examines ṭūl al-amal in the Prophet’s hadith as a psychological factor contributing to procrastination from the perspective of contemporary psychology. Procrastination is commonly explained through cognitive, motivational, and self-regulation mechanisms, including Future Time Perspective, Temporal Motivation Theory, and Self-Regulation Failure. However, these approaches provide limited attention to the existential and spiritual dimensions emphasized in Islamic tradition. This study employs a qualitative literature-based approach using fiqh al-ḥadīṡ and integrative conceptual analysis. The primary sources consist of hadiths concerning ṭūl al-amal and classical commentaries, which are examined in dialogue with contemporary psychological theories. The analysis indicates that ṭūl al-amal involves a distorted perception of the future, particularly the assumption that sufficient time will always remain to accomplish important actions. This perception weakens the sense of urgency, reinforces attachment to worldly concerns, and contributes to delayed action. The study proposes an integrative model in which ṭūl al-amal functions as a psychological antecedent of procrastination through cognitive-temporal and affective-motivational pathways. The study contributes to Islamic interdisciplinary scholarship by positioning mortality awareness as a potential corrective mechanism.
