Surau Calau and Its Manuscripts: Dynamics and Influence on Post-Padri Adat-Islam Reconciliation in Minangkabau (1830–1869)

Abstract

Purpose
This study delineates the intellectual history of Surau Calau and its manuscripts as central actors in the Minangkabau peace process (1830–1869). It primarily explores colophons in these ancient texts as guides for the community to integrate religious values with local wisdom.

Method
This research employs a qualitative-descriptive historical approach. Primary sources include ancient manuscripts from Surau Calau and relevant historical documents. Historical analysis and reconstruction were conducted to trace the dynamics and influence of the Padri Movement on reconciliation practices at the surau.

Results/findings
The study finds that Surau Calau served as a safe intellectual space mediating reconciliation between the Padri faction and the Customary faction. Its manuscripts functioned as a “textual peace curriculum” integrating Neo-Sufism into social structures and local wisdom. Manuscript vernacularization and visual diplomacy generated philosophical actions through the co-constitution of Islam and custom (adat) in Sijunjung.

Conclusion

These findings confirm that Surau Calau possesses a bottom-up reconciliation mechanism. Future research should explore traditional leaders' responses to the acceptance of Islamic law in the reconstruction of Minangkabau identity following the Padri Movement.
