This study examines the transformative agency of Anregurutta Ambo Dalle (c. 1896-1996), a prominent Bugis scholar, in designing a resilient architecture for moderate Islamic education in Eastern Indonesia. Moving beyond conventional biographical narratives, this research dissects the subject's leadership strategies through a multidisciplinary theoretical framework that synergizes Diffusion of Innovations Theory (Rogers, 2003), Communication Accommodation Theory (Gudykunst & Kim, 2003), and the concept of Cultural Hegemony (Gramsci, 1971). Utilizing a qualitative historical case study method based on primary and secondary sources, the analysis reveals a triad of interdependent strategies employed by Ambo Dalle. First, he successfully executed institutional diffusion through the hybridization of traditional and modern pedagogies within the Darud Da’wah wal Irsyad (DDI) network. Second, he implemented deliberate cultural accommodation by utilizing Bugis linguistics and local authoritative titles (anregurutta) to foster voluntary value adoption while simultaneously minimizing social resistance. Furthermore, this research highlights Ambo Dalle’s pragmatic yet controversial political maneuver: his affiliation with the Golongan Karya (Golkar) party in 1977. This action is analyzed not as political opportunism, but as a survival strategy that paradoxically secured DDI’s institutional continuity from the repression of the New Order regime, while establishing Islamic moderation (wasathiyah) as a new cultural "common sense." These findings affirm that intellectual actors can permanently institutionalize religious moderation through contextually adept strategies that intertwine educational reform, cultural translation, and tactical political engagement. As an enduring legacy, the DDI network stands as tangible evidence of a viable model for sustainable Islamic civil society development within pluralistic, post-colonial contexts in the Global South.
