Abstract

Abstract

The saprobic index is an index applies to determine pollution level of water based on the presence of organisms such as phytoplankton. This study was conducted to determine the diversity of phytoplankton and water quality of Situ Gunung, Sukabumi, West Java based on saprobic index values. From this study, 32 species of phytoplankton were found that were members of five major classes: Chlorophyceae (66.58%), Cyanophyceae (25.82%), Bacillariophyceae (6.33%), Dinophyceae (1.01%) and Cryptophyceae (0.25%). The most abundant phytoplankton species found in Situ Gunung were Monoraphidium sp., Chroococcus sp., Gloeocapsa sp., and Ankistrodesmus sp. Diversity index (H') of station A, B, C, D, and E were 1.02, 0.78, 0.39, 0.83, and 0.6, respectively while saprobic index values ranged from 1 to 1.67, with the level of organic contamination ranging from light (β mesosaprobic) to very light (oligo saprobic). Based on these results, it is concluded that Situ Gunung has not been contaminated by pollutants.
